No problem. Now that you know it is water-based, you can apply anything you like that is also water-based. I would go with a transparent stain, of which there are tons to choose from. The amount of sunshine and beating wind will determine how often you have to do stain it but I would expect that once a year would be enough. Certainly no more than twice a year.
