You first need to check with manufacture of the spa and find out what they put on it. Most use a water or oil based clear stain. As far as upkeep that will all depend on how much money you choose to spend on a stain, the more you spend the less you have to deal with it. WARNING: do not put a sealer on the manufactures stain, it will makes a mess of the cabinet.
