Hot Springs Watkins No-Fault 6000 heater

My HHS Prodigy heater (Watkins NF-6000) was replaced exactly 2 years ago. Last night the temp was 97 degrees and after cutting power for 2 minutes and hitting the reset switch the heat turned on until about 99 degrees (30 minutes). Circulation pump is ok. Is there anything I can do before I call service which costs $100 just to get them out? Filters are fine (tri-x). Can you take the heater out and clean it? How do you test for resistance? To the best of my knowledge the thermastat and high limit have not been replaced. Can you test these?
