That sounds like a good plan...I have a megabuck sump pump downstairs that I put in when I had the basement perimeters dug up and had these like gutters installed to stop a wet basement about 4 years ago. Since that happened, I have never heard the thing run once...but when it gets checked, it's working...so I understand the security of knowing money spent to prevent a bad thing from happening that works is money well spent!
Then I went ahead and had the sidewalks and window wells redone...and the whole front of the house dug up and material covering the foundation areas where water poured in most of the years my family owned this place and that numbers over 60 at this time...and a french basin system which is really a very pretty rock water retention pond put into the front yard...

and the bottom line: a once dirt basement with an open crawl space of 5 feet of dirt...that was under water every spring til mid summer is now an art studio, a family recreation room and a workroom for my tools, etc...

a generator under a thousand bucks sounds wonderful and I will explore it as soon as I get through with the dentist who is going to do some horrendous things to me in the next week or so...
