You can't double/triple/quadruple, etc, #12 under any circumstances and use it in lieu of the specified #8 or #6. I don't know the size of your conduit, but if it is large enough you can use the existing #12 to "pull" the new #6 or #8, thus replacing the #12. If your conduit is not large enough, you would need to run new conduit. Electrical work is not something you can cheat on.
