Re: Pump No. 1 (the big one) is on it's way out...

The rebuilding idea is obviously dependent on separating the pump from the motor. If the tech detected bad corrosion in this area that may prevent separating the two, you may very well have to replace the complete pump and motor. Barring bad luck, replacing the bearings should give you another few years of service out of this motor. 56 frame motors, being more robust, are great candidates for rebuilding. Around here, motor shops get about 80 bucks to install new bearings. That's a lot cheaper than a new motor.
