Let the water quality dictate it...water with low chorimines, low tds is the same be it 6 months or 6 years. Water doesn't go bad, water quality does which is what water testing is for. What i do is every 3 months i run some water to penchapenny for h20 analysis...in between i use kit or strips.
i'm in florida i change mine 4-6 months...depending on season, bather load, etc. It only gets used a few times during the summer, couple times a week in winter. We shower before we go in....its things like that which will decide how long your water lasts. If you jump in with oils, let your chems get out of control, different shocks, etc can increase hardness, dont clean filters, etc you will be changing it more often than someone who doesn't....which is why time comparisions are useless...
I think florida is pretty easy, i have a pool and big siberian hot tub...except for equiptment failures my maintence is as easy as it gets....chlorine in the pool, and diclor in the spa. Thats the only chems i've ever had to use...IMHO alternate sanitizers are a PITA.
